Whilst it has been an unusually early season so far, TV and newspaper reports of daffodils that should flower at Easter being several months early are exaggerated as a few types always do flower in January. Rijnveld’s Early Sensation photographed at RHS Wisley just over a week ago is one. This is an old variety classed as Div. 1 i.e. trumpet.
It is said to be a parent of another very early hybrid Spring Dawn which is Div. 2 large cupped and bicoloured.
There are other very early daffodils such as the Paperwhites –tazetta group – but these are not hardy in Scotland though other, later tazettas are.
